MADEIRA ILLUSTRATED, published in an all-new bilingual edition, is the famous work inspired on the stay of British draughtsman and lithographer Andrew Picken (1815–1845) in Madeira, who sought the island in search of recovery from his poor health. During his two-year stay on the island, he produced not only magnificent drawings for lithography of various points of interest but also record a detailed map and descriptions of the history, the places, the people, and the inhabitants’ customs. MADEIRA ILLUSTRATED was amongst the first works to supply detailed and useful information to the visitor who sought the Island on the grounds of health, scientific interest, or simply leisure.

SOBRE O AUTOR
ANDREW PICKEN (1815–1845), foi um desenhador, aguarelista e litógrafo britânico, nascido em Londres, com uma curta carreira, mas cuja qualidade artística e obra foram publicamente reconhecidas ainda em vida. Nasceu e viveu num ambiente ligado às Artes e à Literatura, filho do escritor escocês homónimo, Andrew Picken, que também assinou sob o pseudónimo Christopher Keelivine, e de Janet Coxon, filha de um livreiro Edimburgo. Aluno de Louis Haghe (1806-1885), na oficina do qual trabalhou, Andrew Picken recebeu, com apenas 20 anos, a medalha de prata Isis da Society of Arts, atribuída pelo seu desenho litográfico das Casas do Parlamento, o Palácio de Westminster, após o grande incêndio de 1834.

ANDREW PICKEN (1815–1845) was a British draughtsman, watercolourist, and lithographer, born in London, with a short career, but whose artistic quality and work was publicly recognized when he was still alive. He was born and lived in an environment linked to Arts and Literature, son of the Scottish writer of the same name, Andrew Picken, who also wrote under the pseudonym Christopher Keelivine, and Janet Coxon, daughter of an Edinburgh bookseller. Pupil of Louis Haghe (1806–1885), in whose firm he worked, Andrew Picken received the silver Isis medal from the Society of Arts at the age of 20, awarded for his lithograph of the Houses of Parliament, the Palace of Westminster, after the great fire of 1834.
